Day for the Hills 2010 - Make Your Mountain Matter

If you're a keen hillwalker or climber then you'll know how magic it feels to be at the summit of a Munro or other hill, having walked many miles and consumed many Mars bars to get there. For many people this is a true physical challenge, and one which you can be proud to have achieved.

Imagine if you were to climb your chosen hill, have a great time, but also know that you are raising money for a worthy cause?

Imagine standing at the top of your hill and looking around at all the other hills in the distance....knowing that somebody else is at the top of that hill, also enjoying themselves, and also raising money for the same worthwhile cause?

Welcome to Day for the Hills 2010! This is exactly what we are trying to achieve - to get a person or group of people at the top of every Munro during a weekend in May 2010.

The date of this exciting event is the bank holiday weekend, Saturday 29th to Monday 31st May 2010. We're aiming to have a Mountain Aid supporter on each of the Munros (and other hills) at some time during this weekend. And we want YOU to help us.

When Boots Across Scotland organised their Munro Challenge in 1988 it was the first of its kind. No-one had done this before. Their attempt to get somebody onto every summit did not succeed but it raised an immense amount of funds for the organisation and it received great publicity.

Now that "Boots" is no more we have organised the same style of event....but with a few differences! We've opted for a weekend rather than a certain time on a certain day as we know that is just not practical - as the person who encountered snow and ice on the Innaccessible Pinnacle during the event on 28th May 2000 will testify! Also, we're not restricting this to just the Munros. Yes, the Munros are our main target, but we recognise that an ascent of the Cobbler or the Pentlands can be just as demanding, particularly for the very young, the very old, or those who do not enjoy the best of health. But every participant is important to us, there's no prejudice here - if you can raise funds by walking up and down Sauchiehall Street then you're welcome!

Getting Involved

Getting involved wth Day for the Hills 2010 is very easy. On the chart below you will see all the Munros (hills in Scotland over 3000 feet / 914 metres). Hills shown with a green symbol are hills which have a supporter allocated to them, and we are extremely grateful for their support. Hills shown with a red symbol are currently unallocated, and we'd really like it if you could help us out by choosing one of these hills. You can click any of the symbols to see some information about the hill.

Any orange symbols on the map are not Munros, but are other hills or activities being undertaken by our supporters, and we are just as appreciative of them.

If you wish to attempt one of the Munros then please click the appropriate symbol and then follow the link to get in touch. If you wish to choose a hill or activity which is not shown - perhaps one of the Welsh 3000ft hills (or the walk up Sauchiehall Street!) then please get in touch and we will add your very own orange symbol to the right place on the map!

For your challenge, once you are registered with us and we have been in touch with you, we will send you an information pack, which includes some sponsorship forms. You will soon be able to download additional sponsorship forms from our website.

What if I'm inexperienced?

We appreciate that not everyone is an experienced hillwalker - in fact one of our core objectives is to help people who are i experienced to remain safe in the hills. For logistical reasons we're unable to personally escort people up the hills for the event, but we are able and willing to provide free advice and suggested route information to anyone thinking of taking part. So if you'd like to get involved but are a bit unsure then please get in touch with us and we will gladly discuss some options and ideas with you. We want people to take part, but we want everyone to remain safe.

The map is really easy to use. To scroll around you can either click the navigation arrows at the top-left or you can click the map and drag it around. To zoom in or out, either use the buttons at the top left or, if your mouse has a wheel on it, just use the wheel to zoom in or out.

If you prefer to see a list of hills instead then please choose a region below.
